How To Upload Files To The Server

Remember that your host must store all your webpages in order for them to be viewed online by others. You need therefore to upload all your webpages from your computer to the server. A common way to do that is via FTP (File Transfer Protocol).

There are alot of FTP programs in the market and you can find them easily using Google. Here, we are going to use a simple program provided by your hosting company to upload your files. When you signed up with the hosting company, you should have received a username and password to log into the admin panel. Assuming you are using Cpanel, you will see something like this after you logged in:

cpanel login

By clicking on the FTP manager icon, you can configure your FTP accounts or upload files online.

Depending on your hosting provider, there may be a few ways to upload your web pages. In our case, we have 'Unlimited FTP" and "Drag and Drop FTP". "Drag and Drop FTP" is just your windows explorer converted into a FTP program - we will use that in this illustration.

Click on the "Drag and Drop FTP" link and you will have an explorer poping up. If you are using Linux hosting, you should most likely be in the "public_html" directory. If someone types in "www.your-web-site" in their browser, they will be actually browsing this directory. So, all your webpages should be uploaded here.

Open up another explorer. Click and drag all the html files and images in your computer to the "public_html" folder.

When you have done that, go to http://www.your-web-site.com and you should see your website online! Give yourself a pat for having gone this far. You have learned how to register a domain, used good keywords, create, edit and upload web pages. You may browse through the rest of our website to learn more about web design and development.

You have now a live website sitting there. What should you do next?
