Personally, I would recommend BOTW (Best of the Web) Directory because it is very well organized and reliable. The 40 USD submission fee is also cheaper than Yahoo and MSN directory. In this article, I will guide you through the BOTW directory submission process. The technique covered here should work well with other web directories as well.
1. Install google Toolbar at http://toolbar.google.com/ if you have not.
2. Click on http://botw.org to open the BOTW website in another window.
3. In the BOTW website, you will see a search box on top. Type in the main keywords for your website. If you type in "website reviews" for example, you will see a listing of all the categories available on top and urls below that matches the term "website reviews". Click on the category links to visit each one of them.

Under each category, take note of 4 things. a) The title of the category. b) the PR of the page. c) the number of outgoing urls. d) Words that are close to your keywords.
a) Find a category that is relevant to your website theme and contains your keyword in the title. If that is not possible, just look for a category that is most relevant to your website.
b) A category with as high PR as possible.
c) A category with as few outgoing links as possible.
d) Variations of your keywords appearing in other parts of the page.
Once you have found a suitable category, click on the "add url" on the top right hand corner. Follow the submit website wizard and when asked to choose a plan, choose "Annually recurring charge". Why? Because you will never know what will happen to botw tomorrow. If Google decides to ban it (touch wood), you don't lose much.
When prompted to enter the title, do not use the same title as your live website. BOTW and many Web Directories will want you to enter your official company name. If you can, try to include your keywords in it but you have to make it short and sweet. You have to do it intelligently and if it is not suitable, the editors will change it. If you are submitting to other web directories, try to vary the title; This is when manual submissions becomes important. Also avoid using abrev. for example, if your official organization is AIGA, your want to enter "American Institute of Graphic Arts" instead of "AIGA".
Next, pay up and wait for email from them. The approval process is usually a few days. Hope this article makes web directory submissions clearer.
Sitecritic.net also has a web directory. Visit the sponsor page to add or to advertise your website.
